Ad-Free Streaming Is Now a Luxury

Streaming services are rapidly shifting to ad-supported models, raising prices for ad-free tiers and making them a luxury item.

A decade ago, streaming was a refuge from cable TV – no commercials and affordable prices. Netflix charged just $7.99 per month in 2010, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ started with similarly low ad-free plans. But the industry has transformed.

After Netflix lost subscribers for the first time in 2022 and competitors remained unprofitable, major streamers began introducing cheaper, ad-supported tiers. HBO Max did so in 2021, Netflix and Disney+ in 2022, and Amazon Prime Video automatically moved users to an ad tier, charging extra for ad-free viewing.

The price gap between ad-free and ad-supported plans is widening. Netflix's ad-free plan now costs $19.99 per month (or $26.99 for 4K), more than double its original $7.99. Disney+ ad-free is $18.99, up from $6.99. HBO Max's standard ad-free tier is $18.49, and Prime Video requires an extra $4.99 per month to remove ads.

This is a deliberate strategy: executives report higher average revenue per user (ARPU) from ad tiers due to both subscription fees and ad sales. Netflix's ad business earned $1.5 billion in 2025, and it expects to double to $3 billion in 2026. The ad tier now reaches over 250 million monthly viewers, and nearly half of U.S. subscribers of services with ad plans choose the cheaper option.

Apple TV+ remains the only major service without an ad-supported tier, but its executive says nothing is forever. Meanwhile, Netflix experiments with AI-blended ads, and others show ads on profile selection menus or during pauses.

Budget-conscious viewers have few alternatives: free YouTube with ads or FAST services like Tubi, Pluto, and The Roku Channel. While some options like Roku's Howdy offer ad-free content for $2.99 per month, they lack premium titles. Going ad-free has become a luxury that fewer can afford.
