BMW Electric Vehicle Sales Drop 7.4% in First Half

BMW sold 204,295 fully electric cars in the first half of 2026, a 7.4% decrease year-on-year. The decline was driven by weak demand in China, while European sales rose significantly.

BMW delivered 204,295 fully electric vehicles in the first six months of 2026, a 7.4% drop compared to the same period last year. Sales fell sharply at the start of the year but recovered in the second quarter, rising 5.2%, largely thanks to the launch of the new BMW iX3 in Europe.

In Europe, deliveries of electric BMWs increased by 38%, and in Germany the Bavarian brand became the second most popular fully electric carmaker. The company did not disclose detailed sales figures for China and North America, but overall data indicate that strong European performance could not offset a significant decline in other markets, particularly China.

In total, BMW sold 1.156 million light vehicles in the first half, down 4.2% year-on-year. The main factor was a sharp 20.4% drop in China, partially offset by gains in Europe (+5.4%) and the United States (+3.9%).

Electrified models (both fully electric and plug-in hybrids) accounted for 25.5% of all BMW sales, with pure electrics at 17.6% – a higher share than Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz. Among German automakers, BMW and Volkswagen saw their EV sales decline, while Mercedes-Benz managed to achieve growth.
