Health Warning: Increased UV Radiation Risk Ahead of Holidays

Ultraviolet radiation levels are set to rise in Latvia over the coming days; authorities advise avoiding direct sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

According to the European Space Agency, the ozone layer above Latvia will drop from the current 360–380 Dobson units to 320–340 units between June 20 and 22. This reduction will allow stronger ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the ground, pushing the UV index to at least level 6 during sunny midday hours.

Under these conditions, it is not recommended to stay in direct sunlight for extended periods between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. People with particularly sensitive skin can get sunburned in as little as 20 minutes without protection. Using sunscreen can help extend safe sun exposure.

In Latvia, the strongest UV radiation occurs annually in June and the first half of July. Sunburns are the leading risk factor for developing malignant skin tumors. Therefore, it is important to start the tanning season with very short exposure and gradually increase time in the sun.

Those with fair skin, blonde or red hair, and many freckles should be especially cautious, as should anyone who has previously suffered sunburns. Children require particular protection. Eyes must also be shielded, since surfaces like water and light sand reflect a significant portion of UV rays.

The highest health risks come from tanning beds and holidays in southern countries, where UV radiation is much stronger than in Latvia.
