What's going on at Newcastle with Bruno's future in doubt?

Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle's captain, has hinted at a desire to join Arsenal, but no contact has been made. Meanwhile, Newcastle rebuilds after losing key players, signing younger talents to comply with financial rules.

Bruno Guimaraes keeps a special souvenir at home: a top hat inscribed with 'Bruno's magic hat', referencing a chant invented by Newcastle fans after his 2022 move from Lyon. He could have signed for Arsenal back then but chose Newcastle, even declaring the club could become bigger. Now, four and a half years later, Guimaraes has indicated his wish to move to Arsenal's red half of north London.

Newcastle have offloaded several stars in the past 12 months: Sandro Tonali (to Tottenham for up to £100m), Anthony Gordon (to Barcelona for £69.3m), and Alexander Isak (to Liverpool). These sales created headroom within financial regulations, but the squad has been dismantled. Of the 26 players pictured after the 2025 EFL Cup final win, 11 have left.

Statistics underline Guimaraes' importance. Without him, Newcastle won only 2 of 16 Premier League games (12.5% win rate), averaging 0.8 goals scored and 1.6 conceded. With him, the numbers jump to 50.7% wins, 1.9 scored and 1.3 conceded. Season-ticket holder Liam Phillips said he would be 'absolutely devastated' if Guimaraes leaves, as his arrival in 2022 signalled hope and ambition.

Newcastle's hierarchy once outlined a vision not just to reach the Champions League but to win it. However, the club are far from that goal. Isak pushed to join Liverpool even after Newcastle secured Champions League football in 2025, wanting to compete for the biggest trophies. Guimaraes now faces a similar choice. At 28, turning 29 in November, this might be his last chance to win a Premier League or Champions League title if Arsenal make an offer.

Arsenal have not yet contacted Newcastle, who are reluctant to lose their captain. But Newcastle are already rebuilding, with progress on a move for Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, and signings of winger Bazoumana Toure, midfielder Sean Steur and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen. Head coach Eddie Howe warned last season that 'the squad can't get weaker'. Losing Guimaraes would call the entire project into question.
