Czech writer Viktorie Hanišová has won over Latvian readers
Czech author Viktorie Hanišová's novel Sēņotāja (The Mushroom Picker) was published in Latvian three years ago and was nominated for the Latvian Literature Award for best prose translation.
Czech writer Viktorie Hanišová has already become a well-known name among literature enthusiasts in Latvia. Her work has drawn the attention of local readers, and she is regarded as one of the notable contemporary Czech prose writers whose work has reached Latvian audiences.
Latvian-language debut
Particular interest was sparked by Hanišová's first novel translated into Latvian, Sēņotāja. The book was published three years ago by the Pētergailis publishing house and quickly drew attention from both critics and a wider readership.
The novel was nominated for the Latvian Literature Award in the category of best prose translation, reflecting the high regard in which both the translation and the original work were held among professionals. Although the novel did not ultimately win the award, the nomination itself served as confirmation that Hanišová's prose resonated as significant and relevant with Latvian readers.
The success of Sēņotāja has laid the groundwork for continued interest in Hanišová's writing in Latvia, with readers and publishers following her subsequent work, some of which could also be offered to Latvian audiences in translation.
