Pork's Bad Reputation: Historical Myths and Modern Facts

For centuries pork has been stigmatized due to religious, economic and hygiene reasons, but modern science shows it is not nutritionally inferior to other meats.

Pork is one of the most controversial meats in the world. Its negative image stems from several historical and religious factors.

One of the main reasons is the belief that pigs are unclean animals. However, in the wild pigs are actually clean, and their wallowing in mud is a biological necessity for cooling down and skin protection. In Islam, the prohibition of pork is linked to principles of purity and hygiene, and the Quran mentions it as haram. However, there are exceptions – consumption is allowed in situations of starvation.

The Bible also forbids eating pork because the pig does not chew the cud, even though it has a split hoof. Many scholars believe this text should be interpreted metaphorically rather than literally, and may refer to a person's ability to reflect.

Economic and practical considerations also contributed to pork's bad reputation. In hot countries before the invention of refrigerators, pork spoiled quickly, causing poisoning and parasitic infections. Moreover, pig farming was expensive because pigs require a lot of grain and water.

Today, science proves that lean pork is a valuable product. It contains high-quality proteins necessary for muscle growth and B vitamins (B1, B6, B12) in significantly higher amounts than beef or chicken. It is also rich in minerals such as selenium, zinc, phosphorus, iron and potassium. Even pork fat is suitable for high-temperature frying due to its high smoke point.

Thus, although history and religion have left a negative mark, from a nutritional standpoint pork is no worse than other meats.
