Sugar-Induced Memory Damage May Be Irreversible, Study Finds

A new study suggests that cognitive impairment caused by long-term sugar consumption persists even after switching to a healthy diet.

A study published in the journal "Nutritional Neuroscience" has examined the lasting impact of an unhealthy diet on brain function. Researchers from the University of Technology Sydney analyzed 27 preclinical studies involving rats and mice that were fed a high-fat, high-sugar diet.

The findings showed that while memory improved after rodents stopped consuming sugar, their brains never fully recovered to the level of animals that had always eaten a healthy diet. The damage was specifically located in the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for learning, memory, and appetite regulation.

The researchers emphasize that switching to a balanced, healthy diet can still improve memory, but the idea that a few salad leaves can reverse years of sugar-heavy eating is unlikely. To preserve memory function, it is advisable to consume sugar in moderation. While it is possible to lose weight, the damage to the brain may be irreversible.
