Daugavins happy about Tralmaks' Edmonton contract, predicts Šmits to start season with Rangers
Former Latvian national hockey team captain Kaspars Daugavins believes that players who signed NHL contracts in early July had already reached agreements earlier, and he is particularly pleased with Eduards Tralmaks' contract with Edmonton, while predicting that Alberts Šmits will start the season with the New York Rangers.

Former Latvian national hockey team captain Kaspars Daugavins has commented on the recent signings of Latvian players in the National Hockey League (NHL). In his opinion, the deals announced in early July were actually agreed upon well before the official start of free agency, with the opening of the transfer window serving only to finalize paperwork.
Daugavins expressed particular joy over Eduards Tralmaks' contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Tralmaks, a forward, had previously played in the American Hockey League and other competitions. His new deal with Edmonton marks a significant step in his career, and Daugavins believes the Oilers are getting a talented player who can contribute at the NHL level.
Additionally, Daugavins predicted that defenseman Alberts Šmits will begin the upcoming season with the New York Rangers. Šmits was selected by the Rangers in the recent NHL Draft. According to Daugavins, the young Latvian has the skills and work ethic to earn a spot on the roster right away, rather than being sent to the minors or back to Europe for further development.
Daugavins, who himself played in the NHL for several seasons, including stints with the Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins, spoke from experience about the challenges and opportunities facing Latvian players in North America. He noted that the path to the NHL requires dedication and sometimes patience, but he is confident that both Tralmaks and Šmits have what it takes to succeed.
The comments come as Latvian hockey continues to produce prospects who attract attention from top NHL clubs. With Tralmaks and Šmits potentially joining other Latvians already in the league, the future looks bright for Latvian representation in the world's premier hockey league.
