Denza BAO 5: Chinese Premium Plug-in Hybrid Off-Roader Enters European Market
BYD's premium brand Denza will launch its first off-road vehicle, the BAO 5, in Europe by late 2026. The 4.92-meter plug-in hybrid with 544 hp, ladder frame, and off-road capabilities aims to compete with the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser.

Denza, the premium brand of Chinese automaker BYD, is preparing to introduce its first off-road model to the European market – the BAO 5. This four-door SUV features a classic ladder frame, designed for both daily driving and serious off-road use.
Technical Specifications and Capabilities The BAO 5 is a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors (one per axle). The combined system output is 544 hp (400 kW) and 760 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.
The vehicle is built on BYD's DMO off-road platform, equipped with electronically locking front and rear differentials, all-wheel drive, and adjustable suspension. Maximum ground clearance is 310 mm, which, together with the ladder frame, ensures good geometric off-road capability.
Battery and Charging Power comes from a 31.8 kWh Blade battery, providing an electric-only range of up to 90 km (WLTP). Total range with a full battery and fuel tank reaches 835 km. The battery supports DC fast charging at up to 100 kW, taking approximately 16 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%.
Interior and Equipment Inside, the BAO 5 features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, a head-up display, and a separate screen for the front passenger. The system supports Google services and multi-zone voice control. Higher trims offer Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated and massage seats, a premium audio system, and a heated and cooled compartment in the center console. Cargo volume is 475 liters, expandable to 1,736 liters with the rear seats folded.
Market Entry The Denza BAO 5 is expected to arrive on the European market in late 2026. The manufacturer has not yet announced pricing, but if competitive, the model could become a serious alternative to traditional off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser.
