Heart health depends not only on main meals but also on what we choose to snack on between them. A roundup by "Health" magazine lists foods whose nutrients can positively affect heart and blood vessel function.

Fiber and protein

Hummus paired with vegetables supplies the body with fiber and protein, which promote satiety and help regulate cholesterol levels. Nuts offer similar benefits — regular consumption is linked to lower "bad" cholesterol and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. Beans also contain soluble fiber that limits cholesterol absorption in the blood.

Healthy fats and minerals

A snack combining salmon, avocado and cucumber provides potassium, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids, which help regulate blood pressure and maintain healthy circulation. Oats contain beta-glucan, which lowers cholesterol and helps control blood sugar. Greek yogurt is rich in potassium, magnesium and calcium, important for blood pressure regulation, while chia seeds may lower total and "bad" cholesterol while raising "good" cholesterol.

Antioxidants

Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that improve blood vessel function and may lower blood pressure, while lycopene found in tomato soup reduces inflammation in blood vessels and protects cells from damage. Experts note that including such foods in daily snacking can be a simple way to support a heart-healthy diet.
