Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava (National Alliance) has announced the withdrawal of a previous government initiative to increase the daily allowance paid to asylum seekers. According to the minister's statement on Twitter, the decision was made to prioritize internal security needs and curb migration.
The proposal aimed to raise the daily allowance from about €90 to €150 per month for each asylum seeker. The Ministry of the Interior (MoI) stated that implementing this initiative would require an additional €514,575 annually, placing a significant burden on the state budget. As a result, the ministry decided to withdraw the informative report and close the legislative file.
Dombrava emphasized that the state must first take care of its own citizens and called for a review of possibilities to further reduce support for foreigners. The Cabinet of Ministers, led by Andris Kulbergs (United List), had previously instructed line ministries to analyze budget expenditures and prepare proposals for cost optimization. The government also plans to implement measures to restrict migration.
The MoI explained that the proposal lacks political support in the current situation, and funding available to the interior sector will be redirected to address higher-priority internal security needs.
