Experts: strength training is a fountain of youth after 50

Physiotherapists and researchers say strength training at any age helps protect bones, muscles and even brain health, and it's never too late to start.

Aging specialists are increasingly highlighting the role of strength training in reducing age-related health problems. Importantly, lifting weights can be started at any stage of life, even by those with no prior experience of this type of exercise.

Resistance-based exercises — whether using bodyweight, free weights or resistance bands — help build the muscle needed for everyday activities. They are especially important in preventing loss of bone density and related conditions that can lead to serious fractures. Physiotherapist Abby Bales explains that the muscle mass gained through strength training also helps regulate metabolism and blood sugar levels, while improving balance and reducing the risk of falls.

Benefits for the brain too

The advantages of strength training go beyond the physical. A study published in 2023 in the journal "Frontiers in Neuroscience" suggests this type of activity may help delay neurological conditions, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

How to begin

Bales advises building the habit gradually — starting with two to three sessions per week, alternating between exercises for the upper body, lower body and core muscles. Noticeable results typically appear after six to eight weeks, so patience and consistency are key.

The article also features several women who took up strength training later in life. One began after being diagnosed with cancer, another became the oldest participant in an obstacle-course television competition, and a third improved her osteoporosis condition over 18 months through a gradual, guided program. All of them stress that it is never too late to start, and that meaningful change comes from small, consistent steps.
