A vulnerability in PHP software, which is used to run websites, was discovered globally this week. For security reasons, several websites of state institutions and local governments in Latvia were taken offline on 22 October.

Cybersecurity expert Kirils Solovjovs, head of the IT security group of companies Possible Security, said in an interview on Latvian Television's morning programme Rīta Panorāma that this is the most dangerous vulnerability on the internet of all those he remembers.

What is known

The problem affects software used around the world, which is why it also touches public-sector websites in Latvia. Some of them were closed as a precaution.

Technical details and the exact list of the websites that were closed were not given in the source material.
