Spotify removes 50 million suspicious and AI-generated tracks from recommendations

Music streaming platform Spotify has taken about 50 million songs out of its recommendations over the past six months. The company is targeting content it calls “AI-generated trash”.

Music streaming service Spotify has excluded roughly 50 million songs from recommendations built by both its algorithms and its editors over the past six months. The move targets content the company itself describes as “AI-generated trash”, meaning recordings produced with the help of artificial intelligence.

Tracks remain on the platform

The songs were not fully deleted from Spotify. Instead, they were made “invisible” in the recommendation feed, so the platform no longer suggests them to users, although they technically remain available.

Additional measures

Alongside the cleanup of recommendations, the company has also taken action over the past 12 months in connection with serious or repeated rule violations. The source text is truncated at this point, so further details about those measures are not available.

The step shows that major streaming services are trying to limit the spread of suspicious and automatically generated content within their recommendation systems.
