Nearly 5,800 Deaths in France Linked to Record June Heatwave
After receiving additional mortality data, France now links nearly 5,800 excess deaths to the extreme heat in late June, according to the French Public Health Agency.
The French Public Health Agency reported that 5,764 deaths may be linked to the heatwave that swept through the country in the second half of June, though these figures are not final. The data covers excess mortality from June 17 to July 2, when extreme temperatures prevailed across most of the country.
Excess mortality during this period reached 36%. More than half of these deaths occurred between June 25 and 27.
June 23 and 24 were the hottest days on record in France, with local temperatures exceeding 44°C.
Data analysis will continue to confirm preliminary findings, with a final report expected in autumn.
In Spain, about 1,000 deaths are preliminarily linked to the heatwave during this period.
