France Records First Pyrocumulonimbus Cloud Amid Historic Wildfires
French firefighters have encountered a phenomenon never seen in the region: fire clouds, signaling the unprecedented intensity of wildfires amplified by climate change, as the country faces its most destructive week in two decades.

Firefighters in France are battling a phenomenon never before recorded in the region: pyrocumulonimbus clouds, or fire clouds, which underscore the extreme intensity of the current wildfires. A spokesperson for the French firefighter association told AFP that the situation has become an "operational impossibility," describing it as a "natural force beyond our control." For a fire cloud to form, intense heat from the blaze is needed, along with dry conditions near the ground and cool, relatively moist air higher in the atmosphere. As superheated smoke rises miles above the flames, water vapor condenses around ash particles, forming water droplets that eventually turn into ice crystals. These towering clouds rarely bring rain but can produce lightning strikes that ignite new fires and generate powerful downdrafts that fan the flames further. In extreme cases, they can even spawn tornadoes.
Pyrocumulonimbus clouds have been documented in the United States, Canada, Australia, and a few other places, but never before in France. While the country is no stranger to wildfires, the scale and severity of this summer's blazes are unprecedented. Last week was France's most destructive week for wildfires in the past 20 years, according to data from the European Forest Fire Information System, more than doubling the previous record for that period. So far this year, more than 220,000 acres have burned across the country—six times the annual average and 61,000 acres above the previous annual record.
This trend reflects the impact of climate change: burning fossil fuels has heated the planet, making extreme wildfires more frequent and destructive worldwide. A 2024 study found that the incidence of extreme fires globally more than doubled from 2003 to 2023, with six of the seven most extreme years occurring since 2016. After a brief weekend reprieve with lower temperatures, forecasts predict temperatures will soar back above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) in France and 108 degrees Fahrenheit in Spain, meaning firefighters will face even more extreme fire weather, including the potential for more fire-generated clouds.
