Heggebo's deception ban sparks debate over football's handling of missed decisions

West Bromwich Albion striker Aune Heggebo has been banned for two matches after the FA retrospectively charged him with deceiving a match official over a handball goal against Norwich City. The ruling has reignited debate about the lack of VAR in the Championship and how players should act in such moments.

West Bromwich Albion forward Aune Heggebo has become the first player charged by the Football Association under its rarely used "deception of a match official" rule, introduced in the 2017-18 season.

The incident happened in West Brom's season-opening match against Norwich City. With 15 minutes left, a cross from Jimmy Jay-Morgan reached Heggebo inside the box. The Norwegian appeared to try to guide the ball in with his foot, but it struck his hand instead and went into the net. Referee Tim Robinson and his assistants did not spot the handball, and the goal stood. West Brom went on to win 2-1.

FA charge and club's defence

On Tuesday, the FA charged Heggebo under Rule E3.1. West Brom argued the ball had first deflected off the goalkeeper, altering its path and leaving the player less than 0.1 seconds to react, meaning it could not reasonably be seen as deliberate deception. On Thursday, the FA announced a two-match ban, giving little explanation beyond the factual decision. The club said it would write to the FA seeking clarity on how players are expected to act in similar circumstances in future.

VAR debate reignited

The case has renewed discussion about the absence of VAR in the Championship, after second-tier clubs voted in April against introducing the technology for the 2026-27 season, with BBC Sport reporting the idea is unlikely to return soon. Former Norwich striker Chris Sutton backed the ban, arguing players should not be rewarded for successfully deceiving officials. Former West Brom midfielder Richard Sneekes called the decision excessive, questioning where the FA would draw the line in future cases.

Heggebo will miss West Brom's home game against Burnley on Sunday and their Carabao Cup tie at Newcastle United next week.
