An auction in Estonia on 30 October will offer artworks and unique books created to mark one hundred years since the first edition of Anton Hansen Tammsaare's novel "Truth and Justice" was published. A hundred Estonian artists made the works, and reproductions of them were used as the covers of the books. Each book is the only copy of its kind.

The idea came from Maarja Vaino, director of the Tallinn Literature Centre. She told "Aktuaalne kaamera", the news programme of Estonian public broadcaster ERR, that as far as she knows, such a book auction is being held in Estonia for the first time. According to her, no auctions have been devoted to a single book; only rarities by various authors and from different eras have been put up for sale.

Art on a book cover

Vaino finds it interesting to watch how works made in different techniques begin to live their own lives on the covers of printed books. In her words, a cover takes on a more archaic look, and it is not immediately possible to tell from which era it comes. She said the dialogue between the artwork and the book is especially fascinating, as is seeing all the books together.

Auction terms

The starting price for all books at the auction will be 50 euros, and for paintings 350 euros. Bids can be placed on the website of the Vaal gallery.
