Estonian PM: As a nation, we are wealthier than ever before
On the 35th anniversary of Estonia's restored independence, Prime Minister Kristen Michal highlighted the country's economic growth and rising living standards, thanking Iceland for being the first to recognize Estonia's independence in 1991.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal marked the 35th anniversary of the restoration of independence on Thursday, August 20, delivering a speech at the flag-raising ceremony on Toompea that reflected on the country's transformation from occupation to an internationally respected nation.
Michal recalled that 35 years ago Estonia had little to rely on and no certainty that its newly regained freedom would last. Yet the will and determination of the Estonian people allowed the country to build itself into a place now viewed with respect around the world.
Economic growth
According to Michal, Estonia's GDP has grown 15-fold over the past three decades, while wages have risen 60-fold. Life expectancy has increased by more than 12 years, which he described as the largest such increase among European nations. The economy has expanded in 14 of the last 17 years, and recent figures show growth has resumed over the past two years.
The prime minister noted that Estonia is now ranked among the best places in the world to live, with its economic freedom, freedom of speech, respect for human rights, and environmental stewardship regularly highlighted. The country also ranks highly on global human development indexes.
Gratitude to Iceland
Michal recalled that at a crucial moment 35 years ago, Iceland was the first country to recognize Estonia's restored independence, a decision other nations soon followed. Iceland's President Halla Tómasdóttir attended Thursday's ceremony, and Michal expressed gratitude for her country's early support.
Michal said Estonia's goal is to ensure its flag flies permanently atop Pikk Hermann Tower, stressing that freedom cannot be taken for granted and that the work to protect it must continue.
