A protest over diesel prices in Italy, involving truck drivers, has halted production of buffalo mozzarella. Producers of the cheese estimate they have lost €3 million in only 24 hours. The situation was reported on 22 October by the business programme of France 24, the French international news channel.

Why production has stopped

According to the producers, milk is not reaching the dairies, while finished cheeses cannot get to customers. The disruption therefore hits both ends of the supply chain: the delivery of raw material and the delivery of the final product.

Barclays to cut jobs

The business roundup also covered an announcement made on Thursday by Barclays, the British bank. It plans to cut about 5,000 jobs, roughly 5% of its workforce, and will use artificial intelligence to reduce costs.

Nvidia chief urges “responsible optimism”

At the same time, Jensen Huang, chief executive of chipmaker Nvidia, urged “responsible optimism” about AI during an appearance in Berlin. His remarks came while shares of companies exposed to AI were sliding.

The source does not say how long the protest will last or when production might resume.
