Today, June 24, Latvia celebrates Jāņi, which is also the name day for Jānis. Although it remains the most popular male name in the country, recent trends in baby naming suggest this could change in the near future.

The name Jānis carries a rich variety of meanings. According to researcher Gunārs Treimanis, there are five main types of Jānis. The first is the masculine Jānis – gallant towards women, respectful of work and duties, avoiding unnecessary fuss. The second is the sensitive dreamer, gentle and shy, but sometimes afraid of passion. The third is the hedonist, self-confident and enjoying life to the fullest, though often a spendthrift. The fourth is the complex and versatile Jānis, who undergoes a long maturation process, starting as a rebel and ending with true strength. The fifth is the softie or 'capļaks', described as a theatrical poser, yet also intuitive and practical.

Interestingly, despite being considered the most Latvian of male names, Jānis actually has Christian origins. It comes from the Hebrew 'Johanana' (God is merciful) and entered Latvian via German 'Johan' or 'Johanes'. In a 1654 sermon book, the first part uses 'Johanness', while the second consistently uses 'Jānis'. June 24 is the feast day of John the Baptist, who, according to Christian tradition, is six months older than Jesus.
