New customs duty will complicate returns from third-country online stores
From July 1, a 3-euro customs duty on low-value goods from third countries takes effect, potentially causing problems for consumers who wish to return products. Experts say the process will be complex and lead to dissatisfaction.

Starting July 1, Latvia introduces a new customs duty of 3 euros on low-value goods ordered from third-country online platforms, such as those in China. In the program "Spried ar Delfi", Irēna Knoka, head of the Customs Methodology Division of the State Revenue Service's Customs Administration, explained that the duty may be applied differently – in some cases, the 3 euros is charged for the entire shipment, while in others, it applies to each individual item.
Knoka acknowledged that returning goods to the seller could become a problem for buyers. Kristiāns Godiņš, head of the International Services and Business Department at Latvijas pasts, agreed that people would be justifiably dissatisfied with such a return procedure. The exact mechanism for applying the duty to returns has yet to be finalized, but experts warn of potential complications.
The new duty will affect anyone ordering low-cost goods from foreign online retailers and may change shopping habits. The State Revenue Service advises consumers to be cautious and stay informed about the changes.
