Fire-hit apartment building in Jelgava still partly without water and electricity on Sunday
Part of the apartment building at Stacijas iela 5a in Jelgava, damaged by a fire overnight into Sunday, still has no water or electricity. Residents have returned to their flats, while the municipality has provided a drinking water barrel and police patrols.

Part of a multi-storey apartment building at Stacijas iela 5a in Jelgava, a city in Latvia, remained without running water and electricity on Sunday after a fire overnight, the Jelgava municipality said. The fire broke out in one of the flats, and its consequences continue to affect daily life in the building.
What happened overnight
The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) reported that firefighters rescued seven people from the building. In total, 16 people were evacuated from the house. The municipality said two residents were taken to medical facilities.
Municipal response
On Sunday morning the building was inspected by Irina Malahovska, executive director of the Jelgava municipality. She instructed the municipal police to keep patrol officers at the building, and the company Jelgavas ūdens to place a barrel of drinking water next to it.
The building's manager is continuing work to restore electricity and drinking water supply to the whole house. Water supply is forecast to be restored later today.
Support for residents
The municipality has offered residents temporary accommodation, but so far nobody has needed it. Residents have already returned to their flats. Those who need municipal assistance after the fire are asked to call the municipality's operational information centre on 8787.
