Jenny May releases single "Guntiņa" built on folk song motifs
Latvian singer Jenny May, known for pop and dance music, has released a new single, "Guntiņa", based on Latvian folk song motifs. A six-person team wrote the music, while the singer herself wrote the lyrics.
Latvian singer Jenny May, whose real name is Maija Stuģe, has released a new single titled "Guntiņa". The song combines motifs from Latvian folk songs with a modern sound. Fans of her work may find it a surprise, as she has so far been known for energetic pop and dance tracks and spirited Latin rhythms.
Who created the song
The music was written by a team of authors: Maija Stuģe, Didzis Soste, Māris Orehovs, Mārtiņš Linde, Pēteris Asbahs and Armands Varslavāns. Jenny May wrote the lyrics herself, drawing on folk song words. According to the singer's team, the piece was conceived as a musical journey through feminine energy and the forces of nature. Although she has turned to more folk-inspired themes this time, her characteristic style remains.
What the song is about
The single is rooted in folk song imagery: fire, the sun, the moon and the sea. Her team describes these as forming a mysterious world in which nature and people interact and find strength, and calls the track a song of strength.
Jenny May says she has always felt that Latvian folk songs hold something deeper than simple words: the wisdom, strength and special energy of ancestors. She wrote part of the text herself but took folk songs as the foundation. In her words, the song lets the old meet the new.
The central symbol is the small flame, an inner light that lives in every person. It stands for life force, creative energy, drive and the passion to do things. The singer hopes the song will remind listeners of their own inner strength. She believes that once people believe in it, they can accomplish great things and "move mountains".
