John Deere 6R 260 tractor gets new E19 transmission with 19 powershift gears

In the updated 6R range from US manufacturer John Deere, the 6R 260 tractor is now offered with a new mechanical E19 transmission with 19 gears that can be shifted under load. The model also gets a new, quieter cab and a more powerful hydraulic system.

Agricultural machinery maker John Deere has updated its 6R series tractors with large and extra-large frames, covering models from the 6R 180 to the 6R 260. The latest 6R 260 receives a new mechanical E19 transmission, a redesigned cab and higher hydraulic output. This matters for farmers and contractors who use one tractor for both heavy field work and fast road transport. The smaller models gained 5 horsepower each; for example, the previous 6R 175 has been replaced by the 6R 180.

Power and transmissions

The 6R 260 delivers 286 hp at maximum and up to 305 hp with IPM, or Intelligent Power Management. The extra power is released in specific situations: road transport, work with the power take-off (PTO) and work with the hydraulic system. For the PTO, IPM operates with the rear PTO.

Two transmissions are offered: the AutoPowr, familiar from earlier models, with smooth, stepless speed changes, and the new E19, a Full PowerShift type with 19 gears that can be changed under load. Physically it has 24 ratios, but 19 gears are usable in practice. Range changes use dual-clutch technology, so shifts are fast and nearly imperceptible to the operator.

The controller analyses the current ratio, travel speed, tractor load, terrain slope and data from the StarFire antenna, so it can anticipate load changes and select engine speed and ratio accordingly. At about 55 km/h the engine can run at around 1,600 rpm, while in field work at 20–25 km/h speed can fall to about 1,200 rpm, reducing fuel use and noise.

Cab and comfort

The new cab is roomier and better insulated, with an interior noise level of about 66 dB. This is achieved through floor insulation, a laminated windscreen and improved sealing. The model uses the second-generation sport package with TLS Pro front-axle suspension, which also adjusts damping force depending on front and rear linkage load.

The cab has a new armrest and features from the larger 8R series, including the CommandX Plus joystick, which is standard with the E19. It can control the mechanical transmission and has six configurable buttons. Electrically adjustable seat and armrest settings let each operator save a personal position. Ambient interior lighting is also new.

Hydraulics and extras

Hydraulic flow has risen from about 195 l/min to more than 200–210 l/min. SCV valves have moved from a vertical to a horizontal layout, and their number is 6 plus PowerBeyond. The tractor can be fitted with Easy Ballast, a 1,700 kg weight mounted under the tractor that can be attached in under a minute without a forklift or tools. The series also includes the CTIS central tyre pressure regulation system.
