13 encephalitis patients treated at Latvian Infectology Center in June; five in serious condition
This summer, Latvia is experiencing very high tick activity, attributed to the thick snow cover last winter that allowed ticks to survive well. In June alone, 13 patients with tick-borne encephalitis were treated at the Latvian Infectology Center, five of whom were in serious condition. Doctors consider this number significant.

This summer, Latvia is seeing very high tick activity. According to entomologists, this is due to the thick snow cover from the previous winter, which allowed ticks to overwinter successfully. Despite this, laboratory data do not show a significant increase in tick infection rates with the encephalitis virus. However, in June alone, the Latvian Infectology Center treated 13 patients diagnosed with tick-borne encephalitis. Five of these patients were in serious condition and required intensive care. Doctors view this number of cases in one month as high. This indicates that even with stable tick infection rates, the incidence of encephalitis can be elevated.
