Amazon's Kindle Unlimited (KU) subscription fee has been $11.99 per month since 2023, but there are ways to pay less or even get it for free.
Share a subscription via Amazon Family With Amazon Family (formerly Amazon Household), you can share KU with another adult living at the same address. Both pay half — about $6 each. Go to the Amazon Family portal, add the other person, and confirm the shared address. However, only the primary account holder can borrow books, and the 20-title download limit must be split.
Credit card discounts and rewards Some credit card companies, like Chase, occasionally offer discounts on KU — e.g., 20% off, bringing the price to $9.60. Amazon's own Prime Visa and Amazon Visa cards offer 5% or 3% cash back. Applying for a new Prime Visa gives a $200 gift card usable for KU. You can also redeem points from Chase, Amex, Citi, or Capital One.
Free trial New users typically get a 30-day free trial. Amazon sometimes offers longer periods, like three months free during Prime Day. When buying a new Kindle, you can select the option with three months of KU (sometimes 4–6 months). The subscription starts immediately after ordering.
Returning subscriber discounts If you try to cancel, Amazon may offer a promotional rate for the next few months. After cancellation, you might receive offers with up to 50% off. Check the KU portal — for example, an expired subscription might show an offer for two months at 99 cents.
Gift subscription Buying a 12-month gift subscription saves $1 per month. You can send it to others or ask for it as a gift.
