Spotify begins offering its internal software tools to other companies

Music streaming company Spotify has launched the website technology.spotify.com, where it offers its internal tools and technologies to outside customers. Commercialising such software remains a relatively unusual move in the technology industry.

Spotify, the music streaming company, has decided to take the market for developer and enterprise software more seriously. To that end, it has set up a new website, technology.spotify.com, where it offers other market players its internal tools and technologies in a single place.

The step can be seen as a move beyond the company's core business: Spotify has so far been known mainly as a music streaming platform, but it is now presenting solutions it built for its own use to other companies as well.

An unusual direction

Technology companies often build internal platforms to make their own work more efficient. Turning such solutions into commercial products and offering them to external customers, however, is still a relatively uncommon practice.

Spotify's chosen path therefore differs from how this kind of internal tooling is usually handled in the industry, where it most often serves only the company's own needs.

The source also notes that Spotify's experiments in this area are continuing, but the text is cut off at that point, so further details about specific products, pricing or customers are not available.
