How to Clean a Duvet That Is Too Big for the Washing Machine

If a duvet is too large for a washing machine drum, it can be refreshed by shaking and airing it or washed at a laundromat. German outlet “Bunte” also advises treating small stains directly.

Many households face the question of what to do with a duvet that will not fit in the washing machine. German outlet “Bunte” advises against forcing it into the drum, because in an overfilled machine the duvet, water and detergent cannot move properly. Several simple alternatives exist.

Shaking and airing

Between washes, the duvet should be shaken out thoroughly and left to air in a dry, ventilated place, such as a drying rack or a clean clothesline outdoors. It should be turned over from time to time so moisture can escape, since it absorbs moisture and sweat overnight. In the morning, it is recommended to leave the bed unmade so the mattress can air for a while.

Laundromat

If the duvet still needs a thorough wash, a laundromat is an option, as it has machines with larger drums. Using them costs only a few euros. Before washing, check the care label, because not every material tolerates high temperatures.

Studies suggest that washing can reduce the amount of allergens in bedding. In one study, a wash cycle with detergent removed about 84% of the house dust mite allergens tested, and combining detergent with bleach raised the figure to 98%. Bleach is not suitable for every duvet, however, so it is not a general recommendation. Another study found that temperatures above 55°C killed the dust mites tested, although even a cold wash reduced the measured allergen concentration.

Small stains

A single stain does not mean the whole duvet has to go into the machine. Thick filling and down in particular tolerate frequent washing poorly and take a long time to dry. It is better to treat the stain directly, following the manufacturer's care instructions. The duvet should then dry completely before it goes back on the bed, otherwise there is a risk of mold forming.
