How to Make an Older Android Phone Last Longer

Tech site Engadget has compiled tips for keeping an older Android smartphone going instead of buying a new one. They include replacing the battery, using a sturdy case and installing updates.

New smartphones are getting more expensive. Because of a global memory chip shortage, data from the research firm IDC puts the forecast average smartphone price in 2026 at more than $580, nearly 28 percent higher than last year. The tech site Engadget has therefore put together several cheap or free ways to extend the life of an older Android phone.

The battery

If a phone charges more slowly or drains faster than when it was new, a degraded battery is the likely cause. It also hurts performance, because the battery cannot deliver the quick bursts of power the processor needs for certain tasks. The result is slow loading, lag and even freezing. Many users blame the phone itself and buy a new one when a new battery might be enough.

On Amazon, replacement lithium-ion batteries for Samsung Galaxy phones are listed at roughly $10 to $20. If the phone's back is sealed, a DIY repair kit typically costs $60 or less, and a local repair shop usually charges no more than $80.

Optimizing the battery can help too. Android phones include a battery-saving mode that adjusts features such as screen brightness. Some Google Pixel phones offer Adaptive Battery, which limits how long rarely used apps run, and many Samsung phones have similar features. The company LiTime recommends keeping the charge between 20 and 80 percent, including overnight, which it says can make a battery last two to three times longer than one constantly charged to 100 percent.

Case and updates

A sturdy case and screen protector improve grip and absorb shock from drops, and for an older model they cost little compared with replacing a phone after a shattered screen.

Operating system updates close security vulnerabilities and keep apps compatible. However, newer versions are designed for newer hardware, so older processors and smaller memory may struggle and run slower. That trade-off may be acceptable if the goal is to keep the phone a bit longer.

Phones are not built to last forever, but these steps may delay an expensive purchase.
