A mother shares an experience about her four-year-old daughter who pinched a classmate in kindergarten. According to the teacher, the girl wanted a chair that another child was sitting on. When he refused to give it up, she proposed a deal: 'Either you give me the chair, or I'll pinch you.' She never got the chair.

The teacher observed the incident and told the child to keep her hands to herself. At the end of the day, she informed the mother but asked not to mention it to the daughter, letting the child confess on her own. A few days later, the girl indeed confessed and seriously explained her actions. The mother now wonders how to react: scold and punish, laugh and forget, or analyze and understand.

This case highlights the broader question of how parental language – whether judgmental ('you are bad') or descriptive ('you made a bad choice') – influences a child's self-esteem and future behavior.
