Latvian Road Authority Warns of Slippery Bleeding on Old Asphalt in Heatwave
Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC) warns drivers that hot weather expected this weekend may cause bleeding on old asphalt roads, creating slippery conditions. Motorcyclists are urged to be especially cautious.

According to weather forecasts, air temperatures in Latvia may exceed 30°C in places over the weekend. Such heat will also strongly heat the asphalt pavement, particularly on sections with old and poor technical condition. On these roads, as well as in patched pothole areas, so-called bleeding can occur – bitumen rises to the surface, making the road slick.
To reduce the risk of skidding, road maintainers spread sand over bleeding spots. However, sand can pose additional challenges for motorcyclists, who are advised to ride with extra care. Road users who notice dangerous spots are encouraged to call LVC’s 24/7 free information line at 8000 5555, so maintenance crews can treat the area promptly.
LVC also reminds that the construction season is ongoing – traffic restrictions are currently in place on 65 state road sections. Up-to-date information on roadworks and detours is available on a map posted on the LVC website.
