Impact of Heat on Health

While summer usually brings sunny days, the current heatwave in Latvia has created a worrying situation for healthcare providers. According to medical observations, the elevated air temperature has hit three groups of the population particularly hard: children, senior citizens and people living with chronic conditions.

Children and Seniors Most Vulnerable

Young children and the elderly are most exposed to discomfort and health disorders caused by heat. Their bodies are less efficient at regulating core temperature, meaning even short exposure to scorching heat can lead to overheating. Doctors urge extra care for these groups, ensuring they stay hydrated and seek shade.

Risk for Chronically Ill

People with existing health problems – cardiovascular diseases, respiratory conditions or diabetes – are experiencing more frequent exacerbations during the heat. High temperatures intensify medication side effects and increase the strain on the body.

Dehydration – Common Reason for Hospitalization

Hospitals are reporting an increasing number of patients with dehydration, a condition where the body has lost too much fluid. This is especially common among the elderly, who may not feel thirsty, and young children who cannot independently ensure adequate fluid intake.

Health officials remind: during hot weather, avoid direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., wear light-coloured clothes and a hat, and drink water before feeling thirsty. If dizziness, headache or weakness occur, immediately find a cool place and seek medical assistance.
