Camping with a five-year-old: Pixel Watch scores the night's sleep just 71 out of 100

A Verge writer humorously puts her Pixel Watch's sleep score on "trial" after a camping trip, arguing the device's 71-point rating was unfair given the circumstances she slept through.

The Verge writer Allison Johnson has published a humorous mock-courtroom essay contesting the sleep score her Pixel Watch assigned her after a night of camping. The device rated her sleep at 71 out of 100, a result she argues doesn't account for the conditions she endured.

The circumstances in question

Neighboring campers talked loudly until 2AM, while Johnson shared her tent's air mattress with a five-year-old who slept sideways across it. She also had to walk the child to the bathroom once, around 3AM. Starting at around 6AM, chipmunks screeched outside the tent, followed by an unidentified bird shrieking intermittently at dawn.

Johnson also acknowledges a factor working against her case: she had two canned cocktails, including an espresso martini, before going to sleep, which she concedes wasn't the wisest choice.

Despite all this, the watch recorded several hours of consecutive deep sleep — a point Johnson treats as the strongest evidence that her score deserves to be raised to at least 80.

Written in a light, ironic tone using courtroom rhetoric — complete with a "your honor," a "jury" and a closing statement from the "prosecution" — the piece pokes fun at how little real-world context sleep-tracking algorithms on wearable devices actually factor in when calculating their scores.
