On Monday, the State Police reported that they had identified an incident where an individual falsely represented themselves as an employee of LVM, the state forest management company. This person, without coordination with any involved institutions, contacted a suspected cybercriminal and negotiated a potential ransom payment for decrypting data following a cyberattack on LVM's infrastructure.
Police stated that these circumstances are currently being assessed within a previously initiated criminal investigation related to the cyberattack. No one has been arrested in connection with this matter.
Prior to the police statement, cybersecurity expert Elvis Strazdiņš wrote on the social platform X: "Instead of thanking me, a criminal process has been started against me." However, the police statement did not name any specific individual or confirm that a case had been opened directly against Strazdiņš. Police emphasized that they are conducting verification actions within the existing case.
