Record rainfall recorded in Kolka, wind gusts in Riga reach 31 m/s
A record amount of rainfall - 124 millimeters - fell in Kolka over the past 24 hours, while wind gusts in Riga reached 31 meters per second. The extreme weather follows a powerful storm that hit Latvia overnight into Sunday, leaving more than a quarter million households without electricity.

According to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the country recorded an unusually large amount of precipitation over the past 24 hours. The heaviest rainfall was measured in Kolka, where 124 millimeters fell - a record figure. Elsewhere in Kurzeme and central Latvia, rainfall ranged from 40 to 80 millimeters.
Strong wind gusts
Alongside the heavy rain, strong wind gusts were also recorded across the country. The strongest winds were registered in Riga, where gusts reached 31 meters per second. Slightly weaker winds were recorded in Jelgava and Rezekne, reaching up to 27 meters per second, while Saldus, Stende, Ventspils and Bauska saw gusts of 26 meters per second.
Aftermath of the storm
These weather conditions follow a powerful storm that struck Latvia on Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday. As a result, more than a quarter million households across the country were left without electricity.
