Storm-related power outages disrupt LMT, Tele2 and Bite mobile networks in Latvia
Power supply disruptions caused by a strong storm on Sunday morning have affected mobile network operations at all three major Latvian operators — LMT, Tele2 and Bite Latvia — with Latgale, Zemgale and eastern Kurzeme hit hardest.

A powerful storm that swept across Latvia caused widespread electricity outages, in turn disrupting mobile communications for customers of all three major operators — LMT, Tele2 and Bite Latvia — the companies confirmed to the LETA news agency on Sunday.
LMT spokesman Valdis Jalinskis said about 3% of the company's connections were affected, mainly in Latgale, Zemgale and eastern Kurzeme, though the situation was gradually improving. Most LMT base stations are equipped with batteries, and diesel generators are used at critical network points, with additional fuel deliveries starting Sunday morning. Mobile base stations are being deployed where needed.
Tele2 representative Oskars Fīrmanis explained that disruptions stem not only from power cuts but also from fallen trees and flooded areas that hamper access to infrastructure. He noted the situation would improve if more power lines were moved underground, reducing exposure to falling trees and branches during storms.
Bite Latvia representative Una Ahuna-Ozola said nearly 200 of the company's base stations were currently without power. The hardest-hit areas include the regions around Bauska, Jelgava, Olaine, Riga, Ogre, Sigulda, Salaspils, Preiļi, Ludza, Līvāni, Jēkabpils and Rēzekne. While Bite's base stations have backup batteries, prolonged outages can drain them. To preserve service for as many customers as possible, the network in some areas is prioritizing voice calls, which can result in slower internet speeds.
The storm has also disrupted several Bite customer service locations — in Sigulda, Cēsis, Ogre, Jēkabpils, Aizkraukle and Bauska — while a service center in Riga was temporarily closed following a break-in overnight. All three operators say they are working around the clock, coordinating with power grid operators, to restore full service as quickly as possible.
