Latvia Becomes One of Europe's Drone Centers, New Study Finds
A new mapping of the Baltic defense innovation ecosystem shows that Latvia stands out in drones, autonomous systems, and connectivity technologies, becoming a significant drone center in Europe.

Study reveals rapidly growing sector
The first large-scale mapping of the Baltic defense innovation ecosystem, prepared by Venture Faculty and the Latvia-developed platform Proposal Peak in collaboration with Dealroom, reveals that over 200 companies are developing defense and dual-use technologies in the Baltic states. Of these, 47 are based in Latvia, with 59 companies having operational presence in the country.
Latvia's leadership in drones
According to the mapping, Latvia particularly excels in drones, autonomous systems, and connectivity technologies within the Baltic region. Latvia is the founder and leader of the Drone Coalition, an international initiative involving 20 countries. The Ministry of Defense describes this initiative as a key factor in Latvia's international recognition in the defense sector.
Origin Robotics is highlighted as a prominent company, developing both offensive drone and counter-drone technologies. LMT also plays a significant role, coordinating the VANTAGE project funded by the European Defence Fund with approximately €11 million, aiming to develop next-generation vertical take-off unmanned aerial vehicles in a six-country consortium.
Beyond drones, Latvia has strong positions in language technologies and artificial intelligence (Tilde), as well as in critical infrastructure resilience and communication solutions. In 2025, the Autonomous Systems Competence Centre was opened to connect military needs with technology developers and procurement processes.
Baltic advantages and European funding
The study authors believe that the Baltic region's competitiveness stems not only from technology but also from the ability to quickly implement innovations. Lithuania leads in laser technology, Estonia in cybersecurity, while Latvia's advantage is the opportunity to test solutions in real environments, including the NATO DIANA test center for 5G, AI, and big data solutions in Ādaži.
Europe is mobilizing historically large funding for defense innovations. The SAFE program offers loans up to €150 billion, and the ReArm Europe / Readiness 2030 initiatives aim for over €800 billion. The Proposal Peak platform daily monitors about 45,000 active grant and procurement opportunities with a total potential value of around €150 billion, of which 15–25% are related to defense and dual-use technologies.
