A heatwave is set to hit Latvia this weekend as a hot air mass from Western Europe moves in, pushing temperatures above +30°C in many areas. To avoid the heat, it is recommended to plan outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day and stay indoors during peak sun hours.

Overheating is dangerous, so wearing a hat and sunglasses and drinking plenty of water is essential. If you feel weak from the heat, seek shade under a tree. To cool down, wet a cloth hat or another piece of fabric and place it on your head, or pour water directly over your head.

Indoor temperatures can rise by up to 30% due to the sun. Closing thick curtains or blinds after sunrise can lower indoor temperatures by as much as 6 degrees. At night, when it cools down, open windows on opposite sides of the house to create a cross breeze. Placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan can also act as a makeshift air conditioner.

For hot nights, use natural fiber bedding such as cotton or linen, which breathe and stay cool. Avoid using the stove or oven, as they add extra heat to the home.

According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, on June 25 and 26, the hot air will flow into western and central Latvia. On Saturday, June 27, at noon, Jelgava and Dobele will reach 31°C, and Riga, Bauska, and Ogre will hit 30°C. On Sunday, June 28, the heat will intensify across the country except for the Baltic Sea coast in Kurzeme. Jelgava may see 35°C, Bauska and Dobele 34°C, and Riga, Tukums, and Ogre 33°C. Similar heat will continue on Monday, June 29.
