Latvia's UN ambassador: Security Council is not where the outcome of the war in Ukraine will be decided
Latvia's ambassador to the UN, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, says the UN Security Council will not resolve Russia's war in Ukraine, but it can help increase pressure on Russia.

The United Nations Security Council is not the place where a solution to the war Russia has launched in Ukraine will be found. However, it is one of the tools that can be used to put pressure on Russia and to gain broader international support for that pressure. This view was expressed by Latvia's ambassador to the UN, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, in an interview with Latvian Radio.
The Security Council is the UN body that deals with questions of international security. In the ambassador's assessment, it is not a platform where the course or end of the war can be decided, but it can be used as one of the means in diplomatic work against Russia.
According to her, this approach makes it possible not only to press the aggressor but also to ensure that a wider circle of countries in the international community backs that pressure.
The interview with Latvian Radio was published on 2 November 2026. The source gives no further details on specific Security Council decisions or next steps.
