Liepāja pays political repression victims a single annual benefit
Politically repressed people in Liepāja now receive one 175-euro benefit per year instead of two separate payments. Applying has been simplified, and more than 140 people have already received it this year.

The municipality of Liepāja, a city in western Latvia, has introduced a new benefit arrangement for politically repressed persons, meaning people who suffered political repression. Starting this year, a single 175-euro benefit is paid once a year in place of two separate payments. The change is intended to simplify applications and reduce the administrative burden.
What has changed
Until 2026, politically repressed residents of Liepāja received a 100-euro benefit around the anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, plus 75 euros for healthcare. The two payments have now been merged into one. The benefit can be received throughout the year, rather than only around the proclamation anniversary as before.
Applying has also become easier because fewer documents are required. Applicants no longer need to submit documents confirming medical expenses, a copy of their politically repressed person's certificate, or other additional confirmations.
How many people have received it
More than 140 politically repressed people have received the benefit this year. In total, about 300 people in Liepāja are entitled to it.
According to information from the Liepāja Social Service, the changes have had a positive effect on the social security of politically repressed people, most of whom are of advanced age. The administrative burden has also fallen, both for benefit recipients and for Social Service staff.
