Liepāja City Council Invites Residents to Meeting on Horse Island
On July 14 at 6:00 PM, Liepāja municipal leaders will meet residents at Horse Island (Zirgu Sala) to showcase recent improvements and discuss future development plans.

The Liepāja City Council continues its series of meetings with residents. The next gathering will take place on Tuesday, July 14, at 6:00 PM on Horse Island, in the picnic area behind the Nature House. The event aims to present the latest upgrades, including a new roller-skating track, and to discuss further development.
Over the past years, Horse Island has transformed dramatically from a former municipal landfill into a popular recreation spot. More than 140 tons of waste were removed, and nearly €3 million have been invested, with 72% coming from European Union funds. Currently, work is underway to create a health trail and improve recreational infrastructure.
Participants will include Mayor Gunārs Ansiņš, Deputy Mayor Jānis Džeriņš, specialists from the Development Department, as well as representatives from the Science and Education Innovation Center and the company “Liepājas RAS”. The company's management will present plans for an environmental education embassy – a “twin house” to the Nature House, spanning 160 square meters with classrooms and circular economy exhibits. Ieva Melbārde, director of the Science and Education Innovation Center, will share updates on the Nature House's activities and summer programs.
Visitors can try an eco-printing workshop, so families with children are especially welcome. In case of rain, the event will move indoors to the Nature House. Interested attendees are asked to register.
Horse Island covers approximately 22.3 hectares, with restoration work carried out on over 16 hectares. The area now features new flowerbeds, lawns, lighting, video surveillance, and nearly two kilometers of asphalt road that doubles as a cross-country ski trail in winter. Walking paths total more than three kilometers. In late June, the eastern part of the island was recultivated over 3.35 hectares, including a new 883-meter roller-skating loop.
This is the second meeting in the municipal series. The first took place at the renovated kindergarten “Kriksītis”. Future meetings are planned quarterly.
