Liepāja public transport records highest-ever monthly ridership in September
In September, Liepāja's public transport logged 698,856 trips – the highest monthly figure since the electronic payment system launched in 2024. The rise is linked to the new school year and growing popularity of subscription tickets.

Public transport in Liepāja recorded its highest monthly ridership since the electronic fare system was introduced, with 698,856 trips registered in September, according to the municipal agency "Liepājas Sabiedriskais transports". This marks an increase of over 124,000 trips compared to August's 574,611, a rise of nearly 22%. The new figure also surpasses the previous record set in April. The agency attributes the surge to the start of the new school year, when students and workers returned to their regular daily routines.
Subscription tickets lead the way
About two-thirds of all trips were made using 30- and 90-day subscription passes, sales of which continued to climb during the month. Interest also grew in the annual pass introduced over the summer, priced at 280 euros and offering unlimited travel for a full year – since its launch at the end of July through the end of September, 21 such passes have been sold. Meanwhile, state-subsidized tickets, used free of charge by people with disabilities, their companions, and orphaned children, also hit a new record, accounting for nearly 54,000 trips in September.
Digital payments dominate
Almost all trips – 99% – were paid for electronically via e-card or mobile app, while only about 1% of passengers bought tickets directly from the driver. By route, the tram along with bus routes 3, 6 and 6A carried the heaviest loads, together accounting for more than 81% of all trips across the city.
