On Tuesday, June 30, the Lithuanian parliament approved the new Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius, aged 42. This is the third government in Lithuania in less than two years. Since the Social Democratic Party won the parliamentary elections in December 2024, three prime ministers have taken office. Sinkevičius's government is the 21st since the restoration of independence.

Historically, government changes in Lithuania have been rare. From the 2008 parliamentary elections onward, all four prime ministers served full terms. However, the country now faces a potential anti-record: between 1991 and 1992, three prime ministers served a combined total of 707 days. To surpass this, Sinkevičius's government must last at least until November 21. If it does, the trio of Sinkevičius, Gintautas Paluckas, and Ingrida Rugienytė will have served longer than the 1991-1992 group.

Sinkevičius is the third premier since the Social Democrats came to power. The new government begins work amid a challenging political environment, and its stability will be closely watched.
