University of Latvia revenue exceeds €163 million; expenses reach €155 million

The University of Latvia (UL) reported total revenue of €163.3 million and expenses of €155.3 million last year, with the majority of income coming from academic and research activities.

The University of Latvia (UL) operated at a surplus last year, with revenue of €163.3 million and expenses of €155.3 million, according to the university's annual report.

Revenue Breakdown Study activities generated €74.9 million, including €44 million from the state budget. Research activities brought in €65.5 million, while community engagement contributed €3.7 million.

Expenditure Allocation The largest expense was salaries, totaling €64.2 million. Services cost €23.5 million, capital investments €17.6 million, and employer social contributions and other payroll-related payments €16.5 million.

Donations and Scholarships Donations exceeded €2.87 million, a 32% increase from the previous year. A total of 557 patrons contributed, with the largest donation of €2 million coming from SIA "Mikrotīkls." Students had access to 67 scholarships (11 new), awarded to 312 students and researchers.

Research and Projects UL implemented 277 research projects, including EU- and state-funded studies. The development program supported 17 projects worth over €4.5 million, while Recovery and Resilience Mechanism funds were used for infrastructure, doctoral grants, and research.

Student Numbers and Programs Last year, UL had 16,638 students, with international students making up 8.3% of the total. In the 2024/2025 academic year, 3,239 students graduated, and 5,800 were admitted for 2025/2026. The university offered 125 study programs, accredited two study fields, launched a new bachelor's program in Biology, and licensed several others, including Latvian as a foreign language teacher training and special education teacher qualifications. AI integration in studies continued, and lifelong learning opportunities were expanded. UL maintained its positions in international rankings.
