University of Latvia Reports €163.3 Million in Revenue for Last Year

The University of Latvia (LU) operated with a surplus, as revenues exceeded expenditures. The main income sources were study activities and research, while salary costs dominated expenditures.

According to LU's annual report, the university's revenue last year reached €163.3 million, while expenditures amounted to €155.3 million.

The primary source of revenue was study activities, bringing in €74.9 million, of which €44 million came from the state budget. Research activities generated €65.5 million, and public engagement contributed €3.7 million.

On the expenditure side, the largest portion – €64.2 million – went to salaries. Services accounted for €23.5 million, capital investments for €17.6 million, and social contributions and other salary-related payments for €16.5 million.

Donations to LU exceeded €2.87 million, a 32% increase from the previous year. A total of 557 benefactors made donations, with the largest donation of €2 million coming from the company 'Mikrotīkls'. Students and researchers had access to 67 scholarships, 11 of which were newly established, awarded to 312 individuals.

Last year, LU implemented 277 scientific projects, including EU and state-funded research, as well as collaborative projects with foreign institutions and companies. The development program supported 17 high-impact projects worth over €4.5 million. Funding from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism was used for infrastructure development, doctoral grants, and research projects.

LU had 16,638 students last year, of whom 8.3% were international. In the 2024/2025 academic year, 3,239 students graduated, and 5,800 students were admitted for the 2025/2026 academic year.

During the reporting year, LU offered 125 study programs. Two study directions were successfully accredited, a new bachelor's program in Biology was created, and several new programs were licensed, including those for training Latvian as a foreign language teachers and for obtaining professional qualifications for special education teachers. The university continued to improve studies, introducing new solutions for using artificial intelligence in the learning process and expanding lifelong learning opportunities. LU maintained its positions in international rankings and continued to enhance study programs and research infrastructure.
