AI Drives the Creation of Universal Entertainment Apps

Major entertainment platforms like Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok are leveraging AI to become all-in-one apps that offer every type of content, aiming to maximize user engagement and time spent in the app.

All major entertainment apps are starting to look alike, and that's no coincidence. For a decade, platforms competed to dominate a single format—music, video, podcasts, or audiobooks. Now, powered by artificial intelligence, they are vying for something bigger: becoming the default app users open whenever they have free time, regardless of the content format.

Several factors drive this trend. The market for entertainment apps is maturing, slowing sign-up growth and pushing companies to compete for time spent and revenue per user. Additionally, modern creators often work across multiple formats, making it logical to offer a single home for all their content. AI adds a third reason: it enables one company to efficiently run several formats, and a wider content mix increases user engagement, boosting both ad revenue and subscriptions.

Netflix exemplifies this shift. Over recent years, it has added gaming, live sports, short video clips, and podcasts. The goal is to capture users' time even when they don't want to watch a TV show or movie, filling small gaps usually spent on social media or TikTok. Spotify has expanded beyond music to include podcasts, video podcasts, social features like Q&As and comments, stories, audiobooks, and even physical book sales. YouTube, originally for long-form creator content, now offers short-form content to compete with TikTok, plus dedicated spaces for podcasts, gaming, movies, TV, sports, news, and shopping. TikTok, known for short videos, now supports long-form content, travel planning, shopping, ticket purchases, and has separate apps for microdramas and sports events.

AI plays a central role in this convergence. When format is no longer a differentiator, value comes from how well an app connects users with the next piece of content. Spotify is testing a tool to edit its AI-built Taste Profile and developing chat features for personalized recommendations. Netflix uses new model architectures to improve personalization and speed up development. YouTube has launched AI creator tools, enhanced search with conversational AI, and introduced auto-dubbing. TikTok offers an in-app AI chatbot, video creation tools, and AI-driven recommendations.

All four platforms also apply AI to their advertising stacks, helping marketers create ads, target audiences, and measure results. For consumers, this convergence means fewer reasons to switch apps. The platform that wins users' attention gains more data and lock-in, making it harder to leave even if prices rise or quality drops. As lines between music, video, podcasts, books, and games blur, the coming battle is no longer about which format wins, but which app becomes the universal destination for entertainment, regardless of form.
