Report: Putin Strengthens Air Defenses Around His Valdai Residence
Satellite imagery analysis indicates at least 15 new tower positions were built in October around Russian President Vladimir Putin's Valdai residence, likely for anti-aircraft missile systems. More than 50 air defense positions now surround the site.

At least 15 new towers have appeared in October around the Valdai residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, in Russia's Novgorod region. They are likely meant to host Pantsir or Tor surface-to-air missile systems. More than 50 air defense positions now ring Valdai, pointing to a substantial reinforcement of the residence's protection while Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues.
What satellite images show
The findings come from Radio Svoboda (Radio Liberty's Russian service) and an open-source intelligence (OSINT) analyst who posts on the social network X under the handle @jembobineuse. They analyzed satellite imagery. The towers stand within a 50-kilometer radius of the residence, to its south, the side facing Ukraine. Positions in the northern part of the ring have not yet been found and may be built in the coming months. The analyst himself stressed that the towers are not yet confirmed.
One tower of this outer ring was built much earlier, in March 2026, on the territory of the Khotilovo military base. Putin regularly uses the base, and the residence can be reached from it by train along a specially built rail spur. Several more positions stand on the shore of the Vyshny Volochyok reservoir. On Lisiy Island in the middle of it, Russian military personnel have built a new laboratory complex, which is believed to be linked to Russia's biological weapons program.
Earlier claims of an attack
In January, the Russian military said Ukraine had tried to attack Putin's Valdai residence with drones. Kyiv rejected the accusation. Independent experts and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have expressed doubt that such an attempt took place.
Comparison with Moscow
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, roughly twice as many positions have been built in Moscow and the Moscow region, home to more than 20 million people, as around Valdai. Fewer than 100,000 people live in Valdai, the Valdai district and the surrounding 50-kilometer radius.
Alina Kabaeva, described as the mother of his two sons, also spends much time at the residence alongside Putin. An investigation by the Sistema project in June 2026 found that Western governesses were hired for the president's children.
