Black Soybeans: Why They Are Linked to Hair Health in Korea
Black soybeans, a popular ingredient in South Korean cooking, are traditionally associated with hair health. The only study on their extract was small, so no firm conclusions can be drawn yet.

Black soybeans, a popular ingredient in South Korean cuisine, have long been credited with a beneficial effect on hair health. The British publication British Vogue has also written about the product, looking at its nutritional value and possible influence on hair. The attention comes as South Korea's beauty industry is known worldwide for a broad range of cosmetics, including shampoos, serums and scalp-care products. Black soybean extract is also used in hair-care products.
Why black soybeans
Hair growth and strength depend on several nutrients: protein, iron, zinc, B vitamins and other minerals. A shortage can affect the condition of the hair. Black soybeans are a good source of plant-based protein and fibre, and they also contain iron, magnesium, potassium and folates. Protein matters in particular because hair consists mainly of keratin, which the body builds from amino acids.
That does not mean eating black beans will automatically make hair thicker. Heredity, hormones, age and overall health also affect it.
What the research shows
A small scientific study looked at the effect of black soybean extract on hair. Ten people took the extract for three months. Researchers observed less hair loss and an increase in hair diameter. However, the sample was small, and the study used an extract rather than beans eaten as food, so the results do not allow firm claims that the beans alone can stop hair loss or promote growth.
How to use them
Black soybeans can be added to soups, salads and stews, or served as a side with a main dish. They are not a miracle remedy for hair growth, but a balanced diet is one of the prerequisites for the body to receive the nutrients hair health requires.
