2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE first drive: an electric grand limousine with an 8K living room

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the VLE, an all-electric minivan that features a 31.3-inch 8K screen, 22-speaker Dolby Atmos audio, and massaging seats, but lacks full self-driving capability. It arrives in the US in late 2027 at a yet-unannounced premium price.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its latest electric vehicle, the VLE, which the company calls a "Grand Limousine." While its silhouette resembles a traditional minivan, the VLE focuses on luxury and technology for rear-seat passengers.

At 216 inches (about 5.5 meters), the VLE is 10 inches longer than the GLS SUV. Interior headroom measures 49 inches (1.24 m), allowing easy movement inside. The cabin can seat up to eight across three rows, but the optimal configuration features two captain’s chairs in the second row. These seats are heated, ventilated, and recline (though not fully flat), with built-in massage.

The highlight is a 31.3-inch ultrawide 8K display that drops from the ceiling. It supports YouTube and Disney+ but lacks Chromecast or AirPlay. There is an HDMI port, though running cables across the cabin is less than luxurious. The screen can be split into dual 15-inch 4K displays for individual viewing. Up front, the MBUX Superscreen comprises a 10.25-inch gauge cluster, a 14-inch central infotainment screen, and a 14-inch passenger display.

Audio comes from a 22-speaker Burmester 3D system with Dolby Atmos, which dynamically adjusts based on occupancy. The cabin also features RGB ambient lighting, a scent diffuser, and temperature-controlled compartments.

Two powertrains are available: the VLE 300 with front-wheel drive and 272 hp, and the VLE 400 4MATIC with dual-motor all-wheel drive and 416 hp. Both share a 115 kWh battery offering 435 miles on the WLTP cycle (approximately 350 miles EPA). The 800V architecture supports charging at up to 300 kW, adding about 200 miles in 15 minutes.

The VLE features rear-wheel steering (seven degrees) for tight maneuvers, adaptive air suspension, and active safety systems including lane keeping and automated parking. Drivers can choose between Sport and Comfort modes; in Comfort, the ride is supple and relaxed.

The Mercedes-Benz VLE is expected to reach the US market in late 2027. Pricing has not been announced, but Mercedes executives have confirmed it will not be inexpensive.
